The armies arrived at the city several weeks ago. Before then, the Kingdom of Dhorn had been my father's closest ally. Well known for its fearsome and disciplined warriors, it was the main reason why King $Surname's reign had never been questioned in over fifty years. My father ordered his remaining forces to retreat into the castle while the Dhorn soldiers plundered his city. Still, I felt safe. The castle had never been taken in its history of well over three hundred years. The Dhorn would never be able to [[storm it|Prologue3]]. \

Yet they did. Yesterday, they broke through the main gate, and although the price was high and the defenders managed to push them back temporarily, it was the beginning of Castle $Surname's [[end|Prologue4-1]]. \

After taking a brief look through the window, Shira approaches me with a terrified look on her face. <a class="dialogue">[Shira] :</a> "Princess, I think they've broken through the gates! To my left, I hear Shira giving a soft sigh. Turning around to look what's going on, I spot her lying on the floor, an arrowhead protruding from her forehead! They fight bravely, but they are clearly outnumbered, and in less that a minute, I see how the last of them falls to the ground. Seeing that, my body finally react, and I start to [[run|Prologue18]]. \

I don't get very far however, as I cross the first door, I come face to face with a group of dhorn soldiers. <a class="dialogue">[Dhorn Captain] :</a> "Stop right there, wench!" <a class="dialogue">[Dhorn Captain] : </a>"Idiot! Hold her!"\ Too late for them, as I manage to run [[free|Prologue25]]. \

<a class="dialogue">[Reyer] :</a> "PRINCESS!"\ Suddenly, just when everything seem lost, a heavily bleeding captain Reyer buries a dagger into the neck of the Dhorn that is holding me, allowing me to run [[free|Prologue25]].

[Success] Noticing the soldier behind me doesn't wear armor protecting his legs, I aim for the man's knee. And even though my skirts make this somewhat clumsy, I manage to hit him with my heel. He cries out in pain and [[lets me go|Prologue24-1]]. \

[Failure] I aim for the man's knee but miss. [[Damn skirts!|Prologue24-2]]. \

[Success] I press my backside against the soldier's waist and curl up into a ball, forcing the man behind me to bend over me. The other Dhorn brings down his sword, turning the blade at the last moment so he only hits his comrade with the broad side. Nevertheless the Dhorn holding me cries out in pain and [[lets me go!|Prologue24-3]]. \

[Failure] I try to squirm away but my skirts make moving a pain. The man behind me holds me [[firmly in place.|Prologue24-2]]. \

With the Dhorn Captain screaming behind me, I run for my life. Crossing door after door, I see the bodies of my father's men and woman everywhere, all dead or dying, a grotesque reminder of what will happen to me if they manage to catch me. As I run, I encounter more and more Dhorn Soldiers, but none manage to catch me. Freshly dressed, I sit on my bed, and, as every other morning, I try to push away the intruding thoughts about that fateful night... They put me into this kitchen where I have to scrub pots and dishes, clean vegetables and wipe the floor. Every day. My world has been reduced to the few rooms I'm working and sleeping in. At first I only wanted to hide, anyway. The nights were terrible, nightmares were haunting my sleep. I was actually glad to be exhausted after my long hours of work so I'd be too tired to think. I still miss my family a lot. Sometimes, when I lie awake, I picture their faces, and it's almost like I can touch them in the [[dark|Chapter1-2]]...

Thankfully, the people in the kitchen treat me well enough. Most of the time, anyway, as long as I do my chores. There's Chella. She's the ruler of the kitchen and swings her spoon like a scepter, thus everybody obeys her. I was afraid of her in the beginning but now I think she's rather nice. Though she often complains that I do not eat enough, and that I'm too slim. Then there's the two cooks, Kili and Denny. Kili's a dwarf! And they're constantly picking on each other. It is a wonder that they haven't started a fight yet. Well, Chella boxes their ears every now and then, and that seems to bring them back in line. For a while, anyway. Trissa, Silia and Kellia are also working and sleeping in the kitchen. Chella told me that much like me they lost their families during the Dhorn attack. Trissa, who sleeps in the bunk above me, doesn't seem to mind much, however. She's often flirting with the men, and a couple of times I've seen her behind the crates with a stranger busying himself between her legs. Fortunately Chella guards our bedroom. I'm sure otherwise Trissa would happily take her friends into bed with her. Silia and Kellia, the two other girls, are twins. They are a couple of years younger than me. Both do not speak a lot. I think something terrible happened to them, at least Chella hinted at that. Finally there's Caron. He's a bit older than me. Unlike the rest of us, he's not really working in the kitchen, rather he's around every now and then, running errands for Chella and the cooks. Trissa usually makes a pretty face at him when she spots him, and I believe I've heard them once behind the crates. I'm not sure if Caron knows who I really am, but he's pretty friendly around me. He even showed me a couple of tricks like stealing a plum from someone's pockets, or how to pick a lock using [[needle and twine.|Chapter1-3]]

I applied my newly gained knowledge last night. I'm not allowed to leave the kitchen and the adjacent rooms, for reasons of my own safety, as everyone told me, but I don't want to be put in a cage. So I was waiting until Chella, the cooks and the girls had gone to sleep, then snuck out of my room and down the corridor. Unfortunately they caught me. Saying goodbye to Chella, I make my way to the stairs. This time, no one stops me. For the first time since I arrived, I enter the tavern I have heard day and night during the last several months. It's snug and tidy, a place where merchants and perhaps even nobles would go to for a nice meal. Seems I haven't been scrubbing pots for drunk sailors at least. I long for the exterior more than anything in the world. Hurriedly, I head towards the [[exit|Chapter1-65-1]].

Betuncaria, the city of eternal rain. Luckily, it's just a name, and a beautiful weather greets me as I exit the tavern. I've spent all of my life here, or rather, in the castle above the city. Dad didn't want me to spend time with the citizens. Too dangerous, everybody told us. Naturally, I was kind of afraid of the streets when I was young. Everything seemed so... chaotic. So many people walking around aimlessly. It took me a while to realize there's more to it than that. I remember my first night sneaking out of the castle for fun. Shira had arranged it with some citizen who ran a rather famous restaurant to prepare some local specialties for us. Shira was supposed to meet the guy at one of the smaller gates near the kitchen complex to pick up the food. In her stead, [[I went|Chapter1-66-1]]. <<audio $Music stop>> <<set $Music to "City">>

I recall stepping through the gate, with a shawl wrapped around my head to disguise myself. In hindsight that was probably more of a giveaway that I'd be someone who doesn't want to be recognized. But at the time, it felt appropriate. Glancing about I felt... vastly superior. My family actually owned the big castle behind me, which towered high above all the other buildings in the city. I looked back at the castle walls, and felt... powerful... Of a different [[station|Chapter1-67-1]]....

The guy was already waiting for me. He looked at my shawl, and a smile spread across his face. He gave me the food and went on his way without another word. I stood there for a moment, wondering whether he had known who I was. Whether he'd be telling his wife and his children of his encounter with the princess. For a moment my very much younger self felt like a [[goddess.|Chapter1-68-1]]

I'm not sure what to make out of these memories now. Taking a long, deep breath, I look about. Nobody is paying me attention. Although these are the same people they were a few months ago. In any case, it feels good to be outside. I never liked being confined to a single place. Now, where in the [[city|Chapter2-1-1]] would I be?

Not recognizing the street, I decide to head to nowhere in particular. Just enjoying the feeling of the wind and sun on my skin after so long. I pass through some streets that are familiar, and many others that are not, always avoiding the ever present Dhorn patrols. The towering figure of the castle watches over me from afar, but I do my best to push the bitter memories from my mind as I [[wander through the city|Chapter2-2-2]]. \

When I enter, I find a exquisitely decorated store. The clothes selection is magnificent, I could have worn some of those dresses back when I was living at the castle, when my parents were still alive... For a second, I feel like crying, but, pushing those thoughts out of my mind, I make my way to the [[owner|Chapter2-3-1]]. \

The man wears some fancy clothes, matching the ones he sells. He takes a brief look at me, and then, with an annoyed look on his face, he addresses me. <a class="dialogue">[Gaston] :</a> "Yes?
